Hoiho

Name & Meaning:

Hoiho is Māori for "noise shouter," named for their distinct call. They are also known as takaraha.

Physical Appearance:

They stand about 65 cm tall and weigh 5 to 6 kg. They feature a pale yellow band of feathers running from their eyes around the back of their head.

Habitat & Location:

They are found only in New Zealand: on the South-east South Island, Stewart Island, and sub-Antarctic Auckland and Campbell Islands.
